People are always looking for a bargain. There are those who are willing to take the non-brand name products in exchange for saving a penny or two. While there is nothing wrong with that, are they getting the better deal when it comes to food choices? Not necessarily.


Foods that are less in quality tend to be cheaper because they have less nutritional value. It is entirely possible that if you are trying to save money while you diet, you are probably missing essential nutrients. If you buy something that is low in fiber and high in fat and sugars, you will naturally eat more because your body is looking for the nutrients it just can’t find in these less expensive foods.

This is terrible for those who just try to take care of themselves and are trying to diet. All you want to do is save money. But one thing we can certainly not afford to do is to put your health at risk.

1. Make a List

In addition to using coupons- You can check in with your local grocery store to see when they have “double coupon day.” Most groceries have them, but you’ll probably have to ask the customer service when those days are up.

3. Eat at Home
The cost of going out to eat can wind up claiming a majority of your paycheck if you are not careful. Also, eating at home means you have control over fatty and unhealthy additives such as butter and cooking oils.

4. Pack your Water
Instead of spending a dollar here and there for water, try packing it yourself in a small bottle that you can carry with you all day.

5. Bargain Grocery Stores
You should shop for your groceries at a bargain grocery store. You can save hundreds a month this way and even more when combined with coupons.

6. Buy in Bulk
Buy larger amounts of your high-quality content food. You often get more food for your dollar when you buy this way.

7. Avoid Prepackaged Foods
Do not be lured by low-cost prepackaged foods. Fresh fruit and vegetables are less expensive than prepackaged food. Do a little search and find a local farmers market where you can find lower prices and maybe even be able to do a bit of haggling for a bargain.

8. Reuse Leftovers
If you do not like to eat the same food over and over again, you should turn leftovers into an entirely new and delicious meal.

You can make a great white bean soup with leftovers from a rotisserie chicken. It’s a tasty soup, eat it with toasted some bread.

Things that you can make into a sandwich will work well later (poached chicken, meatballs, meatloaf, roast beef, pork/chicken). If whole chickens are on sale, you can buy two and cook them both. The first night you cook chicken, and then you can make sandwiches, soup, hotcakes, put in fried rice. You can stretch a few chickens and make some portable options too.

Find the day when you time for preparation and make a roast, then share it, make soup, etc. to sustain you for the rest of the week.

9. Try Less Expensive Cuts of Meat
You can still enjoy meat, even if you are on a tight budget. Look for cheaper cuts of meat, like chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts, and try different cooking methods, such as the slow cooker to make harder cuts of meat tender and juicy.

If you’re a carnivore, you’ll learn to love cheaper cuts! Bone-in, skin-on, tougher cuts of red meat and organ meat are all dirt-cheap (and more nutritious and aromatic!)

A crock pot does a fantastic job of making cheap cuts of meat (pork shoulder, chuck, roast, etc.) tender and juicy. Look for cheaper cuts instead of needing to ask yourself how a cash advance works to afford that fancy meat. Lamb throats, pork belly, and cheeks, beef, whole chickens are great to buy in bulk and so you have enough for leftovers, plus a carcass for soup, chicken liver, muscle mass, etc. Perhaps borrow a book from the library that gives you the techniques to make the most of these cuts.

10. Plan and Prepare Meals Ahead
Whether it is the weekend, breakfast from tomorrow, lunch or dinner, eating in advance is a step in the right direction to eat healthy. Plus, it is also an excellent way to ensure that you eat what is in the refrigerator to minimize waste.

As you can see, there are many ways to eat healthy on a budget. Although foods that are necessary for your diet can be expensive, they do not have to be. There is always a way to save money. Remember to eat healthy and follow these tips for a more affordable, healthy lifestyle.
