Heart disease is a frightening condition to have. It’s potentially fatal without proper treatment. If caught early, heart disease can be treated and damage to the heart can be prevented. There are many early symptoms of heart disease in men, but they’re frequently ignored. These signs may seem minor and unrelated to heart disease. However, these are serious symptoms that should be evaluated by your doctor.

One symptom of heart disease is a condition called angina. Angina is both more common and more serious than most other early symptoms. It can lead to cardiac arrest, though it’s not always the precursor to more serious symptoms. Angina is characterized by heaviness in the chest or pain in various areas of the body. Pain from angina can be felt in the jaw, shoulder, back, or chest. Since it’s not always felt in the chest, it is sometimes mistaken for indigestion and subsequently ignored.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is another condition that may be a symptom of heart disease. People with sleep apnea stop breathing for a few seconds multiple times each night. This causes your heart to work harder.

Atherosclerosis is another incredibly serious symptom of heart disease. It’s caused by plaque buildups in the major arteries. These buildups clog the arteries and restrict blood flow. This causes the heart to work harder. A sign of this condition is poor circulation in the extremities, which leads to cold hands and feet.

Other Symptoms

Many early symptoms of heart disease are discounted as minor and ignored. But, even minor symptoms can indicate a larger problem.

Some easily overlooked symptoms are those that do not seem to be connected to the heart. These symptoms include dizziness, sweating, shortness of breath after physical activity, and fatigue.

Other often overlooked symptoms of heart disease are directly related to the heart but are still considered minor. These include rapid heartbeat and heart palpitations.

Some signs of heart disease cannot be felt. They can only be revealed through medical testing. High cholesterol is one of these factors.

Risk Factors

If you have risk factors for heart disease, you should take extra care to watch for these symptoms. Some risk factors include poor diet, obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, and family history. But, even if you don’t have these risk factors, you can still develop heart disease. It’s characterized as a disease only the elderly and extremely unhealthy develop, but anyone is susceptible to heart disease. The early symptoms of heart disease in men should not be ignored, no matter how minor they seem.
