Every year 1.3 million woman worldwide are diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately, 7 percent of those women are under forty years old. In order to raise awareness, Crossfit Ganbatte will host their 2nd Annual “Barbells for Boobs” Fundraiser on Saturday, June 14, 2014 located at Crossfit Ganbatte, 3235 San Fernando Road Unit 4 in Los Angeles. The healthy life-style event will include fitness, music, food and fun for the whole family. Barbells for Boobs, is a non-profit organization that provides funding to pay for breast cancer detection services for thousands of people who don’t qualify for assistance elsewhere. All funds raised will go to support a low income client in the Cancer Center at St. Francis Hospital in the greater Los Angeles area.
Last year, Crossfit Ganbatte became involved with the Barbells for Boobs event upon the urging of their friend and yoga instructor Erika Rae Theobold-Grant, who tragically lost her life in a recent car accident. The Crossfit Ganbatte family wants to honor her legacy by continuing to support this outstanding cause.
Crossfit Ganbatte { gan – ba – teh } was created by life-long athlete JP Amistoso. Ganbatte is a Japanese word which means “Do Your Best.” Although Crossfit may seem intimidating and competitive to casual athletes, Crossfit Ganbatte puts a whole new spin on the intense mentality. JP Amistoso has created an environment filled with positive energy that encourages athletes to achieve their personal best. Crossfit Ganbatte programs aim to improve capacity in ten recognized fitness domains: Cardio-Respiratory Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance and Accuracy. Crossfit Ganbatte also strives to instill in children a well-rounded life of health and fitness.  Through Ganbatte, JP Amistoso is developing a strong community of confident and healthy individuals of all ages and levels of athleticism. Zionna Hanson founded Barbells for Boobs in 2009 after her best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 26. Because of her young age, the doctors advised her to simply come back when she was 40. Due to her persistence at being screened it was discovered that she had Stage 0 (DCIS) breast cancer. It was in part her friend’s strong survivor spirit along with the challenges that she faced in accessing breast health care services that inspired Zionna to create Barbells for Boobs as a proactive voice and supportive resource in the fight against breast cancer. The first Barbells for Boobs event was held in a parking lot with 60 athletes from 3 local CrossFit affiliates. Since then, Barbells for Boobs has grown exponentially and now involves more than 45,000 participants across 1300 affiliates in 23 countries. For more information, visit www.barbellsforboobs.com
