You know that CrossFit as a sport is growing extremely fast (see “How Fast Is CrossFit Growing? The Chart Tells The Story” to see for yourself), and you know the CrossFit Games are growing fast. But did you realize how fast?

In 2011, the CrossFit Games Open debuted. More than 26,000 athletes signed up to compete. In 2012, 69,240 people signed up to compete in the Open. In 2013? 138,000 people registered to compete. That is a year over year growth rate of 166% and 99%, respectively, with women’s growth in participation outpacing men’s (129% to 109%).

Demonstrating CrossFit’s increasing popularity with older athletes, more than 20% of all participants (28,000 competitors) in 2013 are Masters, which includes the new 40-44 age group added for 2013. While each age group nearly doubled in participation between 2012 and 2013, the largest jumps came in Masters women 45-49 and 50-54 with 106% and 105% growth, respectively.

The raw participation data is below. Numbers may not add exactly due to tie scores among competitors.

73,429 Individual Men (35,108 in 2012)

7,208 Masters Men 40-44 (n/a in 2012)

3,254 Masters Men 45-49 (1,638 in 2012)

1,597 Masters Men 50-54 (847 in 2012)

797 Masters Men 55-59 (414 in 2012)

400 Masters Men 60+ (218 in 2012)

46,639 Individual Women (20,324 in 2012)

4,763 Masters Women 40-44 (n/a in 2012)

2,368 Masters Women 45-49 (1,150 in 2012)

1,098 Masters Women 50-54 (535 in 2012)

494 Masters Women 55-59 (278 in 2012)

263 Masters Women 60+ (145 in 2012)

For all your friends who may believe that CrossFit is merely a fad, wait until 2014 when they find themselves part of another year of exponential growth.

It's that time of year again.... the time to honor and remember all our fellow soldiers who've sacrificed so much for our country. It's Graham CrossFit tradition that each Memorial Day weekend we do the workout Murph, not just to remember the heroic efforts of Lieutenant Michael Murphy, but all those who serve our country and protect our freedom. This year, we have a twist on our tradition, thanks to our very own student member Zoey Selby. For her senior project, Zoey has created the Stay Strong WOD On organization, a non-profit that was created out of Zoey's passion and interest in physical fitness. Her goal is to have the community sign up and participate in the workout Murph in the name of a fallen soldier and since she has gone to so much work, Graham CrossFit is honored to participate and promote this event. Here's how it works: The Murph Workout Event will take place Monday, May 27 at 11am. 1. You need to go to http://staystrongwodon.weebly.com/register.html and register. There you will pick the name of a fallen soldier that you want to honor with your workout. 2. Then, you have two options for doing the workout. You can join Zoey at 11am at the Harry Lang Stadium. They will be doing the workout at the stadium with situps instead of the pull ups. OR 3. You can come to Graham CrossFit and do Murph with the pull ups. It's that simple! This event is FREE and open to anyone! Zoey's goal is to have enough people participate to match the number of soldiers marked in the Arlington Project which is over 6843 and growing. There will be plenty of options for the workout! For those of you brave enough to tackle it on your own, you will have plenty of time to complete the workout. We will also have scaled options, team and partner options as well. You must register on the site to help Zoey, and this event is OPEN TO ANYONE AND ANY OTHER CROSSFIT GYM that would like to help Zoey achieve her goal for her senior project.

CrossFit Break Through shared an image on Facebook

PLEASE read until the very end. As many of you know, we have a program called BreakThrough Essentials. This class has almost 15 people and meets three mornings a week and is the only program of it's kind in Central Oregon (or anywhere else that I am aware of!). Coach Tom designed this class with the 55+ year old individuals in mind. He asked himself, what does this population need in order to either remain physically active or become physically active. Coach Tom knew this population of amazing people needed functional movements that increase their quality of life. So he developed BreakThrough Essentials. I just wanted to give a shout out to some people in the class who have made amazing progress! Also, thank you Beckie Sibley for your dedicated help to these wonderful people! Teddi has been with us for just over 3 months and has LOST 20 lbs!! Jay and Lynda have lost a considerable amount of weight also (in the 20 lb range or higher) and gained a lot of strength and stamina also! Marilynne, who is a petite cute lil thing, has become a beast of sorts and has gained an amazing amount of strength and come leaps and bounds! Sam has also lost several lbs and doing amazing! Mike is stronger now and his capacity to do work has increased by leaps and bounds. Ned...Ned, due to his neuropathy, had very little quad strength when he joined us a few months ago, and could not squat with out holding on to something to help him back up...NOW...he can squat to parallel and stand back up multipule times on his own. Ned's legs also used to give out on him when he walked, so he had to walk with a cane...he no longer has that issue! He has gained so much strength in his legs he does not need his cane any longer. Brenda, she's a trooper!! She comes to Essentials with an amazing attitude and ready to work! She's inspires everyone with how limper she is too! Bonnie, Joyce, Joan, Les and John....You have all made incredible progress and we are so proud of you! I know not all of these people will read this post, but I still wanted to brag about them. They make me smile every time they walk through the door. If you know anyone 55 yrs or older who would benefit from moving....have them come see us! The cost is only $59/month. Love you Essential peeps! :D

I also am always honored to do a hero WOD for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for myself, my family, and the rest of our country. Today is also Armed Forces Day which makes me thankful for all the men and woman in all the services past, present, and future. Lastly, we send off Travis to basic training.
